I saw Tim Burton's new film, Alice in Wonderland, during opening weekend a couple of weeks ago. Alice is one of my favorite works of literature. I love it for its imagination, nonsense, and whimsy. I adore the Sir John Tenniel illustrations. I own a set each of Alice-themed tea cups and coffee cups. Just the other day, I purchased Carroll's preliminary work, Alice Under Ground. I am a fan. It seems that it's pretty trendy to be a fan right now, but all I can say is that a bunch of us must have pretty good taste.
That said, I absolutely hated this film version. I found the graphics cheesey, the storyline BORING, and the characterization of Alice to be flat, uncompelling, and again, boring. I don't usually leave a movie with the feeling of "hated it!" but I absolutely I felt like I had wasted a good two hours and $7. This version starts off with grown-up Alice having to deal with the constraints of society and an unwanted marriage proposal from a man who clearly does not tolerate her daydreams and whimsies. She falls down a rabbit hole (surprise) and finds out that she may have once visited Wonderland, and that she is fated to take on the great beast, the Jabberwocky, in order to restore order and proper rule to the land.
Likes:
- Costumes
- Johnny Depp's acting is superb--did we expect anything else?
- Helena Bonham Carter stole the show. Her characterization of the Red Queen is wonderful.
Everything else. I looked forward to this movie long before the actual previews came out, and it fell far short of my expectations.
SMF rating: 1/5 stars
