This week's movie is The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Emily Blunt. My sis and I saw it yesterday. I love films that involve both strong action sequences and elements of fantasy and folklore, so this weekend's move pick was an easy choice.
The film starts out with Lawrence (Del Toro) returning home after spending many years estranged from his family. He meets his deceased brother's fiance (Blunt) and promises her that he will find out what happened to his brother, who was viciously murdered by an unknown assailant. During his investigations, Lawrence learns that a werewolf probably killed his brother. Unfortunately, Lawrence is bitten by the werewolf, which causes him obvious problems. Toward the end, he unearths some interesting secrets about himself and his family.
Likes:
- Exciting action sequences--I was never bored!
- Fantastical elements, i.e. werewolf folklore
- Casting--I really like Benicio Del Toro and Emily Blunt. Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, V for Vendetta) plays a supporting role, and he's very good.
- Atmospheric elements--beautiful setting, great cinematography, stirring score.
- Lack of character development in the supporting roles
- Big secrets were sloppily explained and left much for the viewer to infer--I would have liked more background and more explanation of the relationship between Lawrence and his father
- I would have enjoyed more of a "history lesson" on werewolves

goodness, thank you SO much for your wonderful, wonderful comment. i don't even know how to respond to such kindness.
